7 November 2010 - Bristol & West Ladies 0 - 4 Cheltenham Civil Service Ladies
Another game against Bristol & West!
We travelled to Bristol on a high from the splendid performance from our game against Dursley last week; we knew it was going to be difficult as Bristol & West are a very capable side when given the chance to play. We welcomed back Terrie Lockett & Katie Hughs from injury and were boosted with the news that Gemma Riley had recovered from a pulled Hamstring.
Civvy started the game with pace and was very nearly rewarded within 3 minutes as Roxanne George collected a ball on the edge of the Bristol Penalty area and fired at goal only to see it rebound to safety off the post, the pressure continued and more disappointment as Gemma Riley took the ball towards goal from a cross field pass to calmly slot the ball into the net, only for it to be ruled out by the linesman flag for offside.
Both sides settled and duly cancelled each other out for the remainder of the first half with several chances going begging for both sides.
Nil, Nil at the break so something had to give in the second half!
Hayley Wheeler again worked her magic running the left wing and within minutes of the restart we had ourselves a corner. Hayley placed the ball beautifully into the area where amongst several bodies the ball fell into the path of Hot Shot Gemma Riley to poke the ball in from close range. Civvy haeds were lifted and we then took the game up a gear and produced some excellent football.
With Bristol pushing ever forward we caught them with a break away with the industrious Kelly Churchley running the ball up the right hand flank and striking the ball beautifully from 25 yards out over the despairing Bristol Keeper into the back of the net. More attacking led to another Corner and again a good ball in found Kate Brisland at hand on the near post to deftly head the third. A superb second half performance was rounded off by a second strike, much the same as her first, from Kelly Churchley resulting in a fourth goal. Excellent defending from both the midfield and Back line saw us finish the game with a clean sheet. Well done to all the girls both Civil Service & Bristol / West for making it a very good game of football to stand and watch.
31st October – Cheltenham Civil Service Ladies v Dursley Town Ladies
Another great performance from the Civil Service Ladies in our game against Dursley.
We started brightly with some flowing football, crisp passing and some very good movement. It didn’t take long before the pressure being put on the Dursley defence saw a reward when we were awarded a Penalty for a foul just inside the area. Up stepped Kate Brisland full of confidence and slotted the ball neatly into the bottom corner.
Quick succession further goals from the industrious Becky Cross with a fine run into the area and a deft touch to put the ball under the diving Dursley Goalkeeper and a straight forward Tap in from Kelly Churchley after some excellent wing play from young Hayley Wheeler saw her terrorise the Dursley defence before sliding the ball neatly across the box for Kelly to tap home.
Disappointment for Hot Shot Gemma Riley who had to be replaced after only 15 minutes with a pulled Hamstring, she was looking to continue her fine form of scoring in every game.
Jody Ling was brought on in Gemma’s place and apart from actually scoring filled Gemma’s spot very well – not for the want of trying I might add, if it had not been for an excellent display of acrobatics from the Dursley Goalkeeper Jody could have scored 4 Goals.
Another 2 Goals before half time from the industrious Hayley Wheeler & Kelly Churchley saw the Civvy finish the half 5 nil in front.
The Second half started very much as the First had finished with Civvy probing the Dursley defence and again Hayley Wheeler proved too quick and run the Dursley defence ragged and managed to turn in a fine cross aimed at Kelly Churchley only for a Dursley defender to make a despairing attempt to clear the ball only for it to finish up in the goal.
Dursley then started a mini revival after 20 minutes when a back pass to Caroline Cole the Civvy keeper was pounced on and neatly put away for Dursleys first. With their heads up Dursley started playing the football we know they can and mounted a spirited period of attacking football. Civvy on the back foot failed to close the Dursley attack down and from just outside the area Dursley struck another fine goal, quickly followed by another from a corner. Civvy got back to form and managed to turn the tide creating several goal scoring opportunities all of which went begging. A very entertaining game finished 6 goals to 3 with both sides playing some very good football.
24 October 2010 - Cheltenham Town Ladies res 0 - 11 Cheltenham Civil Service Ladies
An away visit to our local rivals Cheltenham Town Ladies Reserves. The game we were all looking forward to as they had beaten us twice last season and we felt that the way we were playing this Season the tables would be turned.
The Game was marred before the start by the fact that Cheltenham could only manage to muster up 8 players on the day. A very disappointing outlook for what should have been a good game.
I compliment the 8 players from Cheltenham for actually starting the game as they showed great determination and a willingness to make a game of it. They battled for the whole game and really made it difficult for us to get into our stride and for this I applaud them. However the outcome was inevitable and it was just going to be a question of how long would it take to score and how many would it be!
We worked well as a team and moved the ball around trying to create space and it wasn’t long before the opening came with Gemma Riley scoring the first of her Double Hatrick; the goals came along at intervals and the game run its course with the final out come being 11 goals to nil.
2 Goals from Hayley Wheeler, 2 from Kelly Churchley 1 from Kate Brisland and a total of 6 from Gemma rounded up the total.
It’s not nice to see this type of game and I only hope that Cheltenham can find another 8 players with the same amount of commitment as the team that played today, Good luck with that Ladies.
I would just like to finish with a well done to all the Civvy Ladies for working as a team and playing some good football under the circumstances. Well done to Gemma for being voted M/O/M.
17 October 2010 - Bristol & West Ladies 1 - 2 Cheltenham Civil Service Ladies (County Cup rd 1)
A visit to Bristol & West for the 1st round of the Challenge Cup. Having already played once this season we knew it was going to be a very tough game.
Civvy went into the game on a high from a super win last week over a very strong Bitton side.
But No game this season is going to be easy. But with confidence high we will look to play attractive football and grind out results where necessary. This game was going to prove just that point.
With both teams being evenly matched the flow of the game went from end to end with Bristol getting the better of the first half exchanges. The game was deadlocked until the 34th minute when with yet another attack from Bristol they were awarded a free kick on the edge of our penalty area.
Obviously this situation had been worked on in training as with all of the Civvy defence expecting the ball to be pushed into the box it was cleverly pushed back across the edge of the area and sat nicely for the Bristol & West player waiting, the ball was struck extremely well and although it took a small deflection there was only one place it was going to finish up. In the back of the net !!
Unlike other games we didn’t drop our heads and with 5 minutes of the restart the ever willing Kelly Churchley latched on to a through ball from the midfield , controlled the ball and turned the Bristol defender then sweetly struck the ball past the diving Bristol & West keeper. One / One at half time was I thought about the right score with both teams creating several chances and only excellent defending by both, keeping the scores to a minimum.
The game continued in the second half very much in the same vein again with both side playing some good attacking football and creating some good goal scoring opportunities. It wasn’t until later in the half when the game looked to be heading for extra time that Hot Shot Gemma Riley came to the rescue with yet another wonder strike from out side the penalty area. Picking the ball up in the attacking half she cut in from the right hand side to unleash a shot that would grace the Premiership, it took this wonderful strike to separate the two teams, and although Bristol & West threw caution to the wind in the latter stages to try and pull the goal deficit back stalwart defending from the Civil Service with excellent performances from both Terrie Lockett & Capt Becky Cross in the middle of the park helped secure the win
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved at Bristol & West for a great day and an excellent game of football.
10 October 2010 - Cheltenham Civil Service Ladies 2 - 1 Bitton Ladies
We welcomed Bitton Ladies from Bristol today, It’s was a match we needed to win especially after our last disappointing performance against Cam Bulldogs.
The Team had prepared well and started off at a very attacking pace. Good work rate, passing and movement from the midfield duo of Captain Becky Cross and Vice Captain Terrie Lockett who both had an excellent game. Attacking threats from out wide in the form of Jody Ling & Hayley Wheeler kept the Bitton defence on the back foot for the majority of the game although both giving way to injuries during the second half. Replacements Tiffany Hopton & Kate Brisland maintained the pressure in their place.
Civil Service dominated the first half with 60 to 70% of possession only to go a Goal down 7 minutes from half time with the Bitton Ladies Centre Forward finishing a well worked movement from the midfield.
After seeing out the final 7 minutes of the half Civvy come out even more determined for the second half. Injury forced Young Katie Hughs off at this stage but again strength from the bench came from Kayley Painter who slotted in nicely. The game moved from end to end with both teams playing some very good football and creating several chances. One such chance came from Hayley Wheeler who after picking the ball up in her own half continued to run at the Bitton defence, beating one then another Hayley pushed ever more forward and eventually found herself inside the Bitton penalty area so with a dip of the shoulder rounded a third defender and delivered a tremendous shot across the goal which the Bitton goalkeeper could only stand and admire as it smashed into the far corner of the net.
With the scores now level both teams started to play with a bit more thought, it became a little cagey with nobody wanting to make a mistake. Solid defending from Emma Anderson and Janet Wheeler at the centre of the defence with Kayley Painter & Roxanne George clearing away any dangers from the wide positions, anything that did get through was neatly picked up by Goalkeeper Caroline Cole.
It looked like the game was going to finish 1 – 1 until 9 minutes from time when the industrious Kelly Churchley pounced on a loose ball, beating her defender she found the pass to fellow front runner Hot Shot Gemma Riley who duly rounded off a tremendous football match with a Goal I think will be hard to beat as Goal of the Season, lofting the ball from 20 yards out over the Bitton defence and into the net past a despairing Goalkeeper.
I would just like to say a big well done to all the girls & also to thank Bitton Ladies for a sensational game.

19 September 2010 - Cam Bulldogs 5 - 2 Cheltenham Civil Service Ladies
A disappointing display contributed to our heaviest and only defeat this Season so far.
Cam Bulldogs were well equipped with a well organised defence and a very quick and accurate Strike Force.
The game was pretty even for the first 30 minutes but the deadlock was then broken as Civil Service pushed up field looking for the breakthrough , a misplaced pass found the Cam Captain free to push a long ball up field catching the Civvy defence off guard, Cam's centre forward was quick to control the ball and skilfully placed it around Caroline Cole in the Civvy Goal.
Five minutes later is was an identical play that gave Cam their Second Goal and left the Civvy going in at Half Time 2 nil down.
Things picked up briefly in the second half as Civvy pushed on again and again with some fine passing moves , this resulting in Hot Shot Gemma Riley claiming her Sixth goal in Three games.
The hopes of a come back were short lived as Cam mounted several barrages of hit and Hope passes up to the front line and sadly on a couple of occasions our back line were caught short thus resulting in another two goals.
At 4 - 1 down we pushed up again and again trying to pull something out of the bag, and we gave ourselves a glimmer of hope as the industrious Kelly Churchley scored a memorable effort by chipping the Cam Goalkeeper from 20 yards - We continued to press Cam but unfortunately by doing this left ourselves open at the back and again a break away gave Cam the final goal of the game resulting in a disappointing 5 -2 loss.
12 September 2010 - Cheltenham Civil Service Ladies 2 - 1 Bristol & West
Another great footballing performance from the Civil Service Ladies who welcomed Bristol & West Ladies at the weekend knowing they were in for a tough game. The teams met three times last season with Bristol & West comming out on top with two victories to Service's one.
The game was a mixed affair during the first half with Civil Service dominating for large periods of time, however they were to be frustrated when Bristol and West broke quickly following a Service corner and scored the opening goal with literally the last kick of the half.
The mood was in Service remained upbeat however and they came out fighting in the second half. Again long periods of time were spent occupying the Bristol half with concerted pressure from the Service Ladies. The Bristols girls looked solid in defence and we at time it looked as though Service would get no reward for their pressure. Good efforts from Roxanne George, Gemma Riley & Kelly Churchley were all cleared with the Bristol Defence holding strong.
The turning point came just 14 minutes from the end. Kate Brisland sent in a superd ball from a free kick out on the right flank , the ball dropped just right for Gemma Riley to put a toe on it and poke it into the bottom corner for the equaliser. The goal spurred Service on even more and the pressure on the Bristol defense was becomming even more intense as Service sensed victory. With just 4 minutes remaining up popped the combination of Brisland & Riley again to complete a fine display of football and win the game. Special mention must go to Terrie Lockett who as Captain on the day, led from the front with a fine midfield display. Well done girls.
5 September 2010 - Dursley 1 - 3 Cheltenham Civil Service Ladies
A suberb footballing display , especially from the Midfield duo of Terrie Lockett & Becky Cross enabled Gemma Riley to claim a well deserved 1st Half Hatrick which secured all 3 points for the Civy Ladies in their opening game against Dursley Town ladies.
Only a brave display of Goalkeeping from the Dursley Keeper kept the score down saving efforts from Roxanne George , Hayley Wheeler, Kelly Churchley & Gemma Riley.Dursley 3 nil down at the break came out fighting in the 2nd half and pushed Civy on to the back foot and eventually scored an excellent long range effort. Stalwart defending from the back line of Jan Wheeler , Katie Hughes , Vicky Atkinson & Emma Anderson enabled the Civy to see out the storm and gain their 1st win of the season.
Congratulations to Emma as she was voted Man of the Match.
