Cheltenham Civil Service 2 -1 Smiths Athletics
A battling, determined peformance by Service saw them take all three points againts a strong Smiths team.
After last weeks reverse fixture Service had a point to prove following their disappointing start to the season. Playing down the hill in the first hall Service looked to take the initiative however they found Smiths in a resolute mood who proved a real danager on the break.
It was Service however who took the lead. A ball over the top of the back four saw a mighty leap by Terry Mitchell. As the ball broke from the keepers grasp, Scott Edgington was on hand to force the ball home. It was not long however before they doubled the lead. This time Mitchell was on hand to slam the ball home and give Service a 2-0 half time lead.
The second half saw Service absorb large amounts of Smiths pressure however they continued to look dangerous on the break with the pace of Mitchell and Danny Warren always a threat. As Smiths pushed for the goal that would bring them back into the game the game became stretched and Service showed good composure, pushing the ball around well. Smiths however did have chances and will reflect of a number of chances that they should have done better with.
The introduction of James Nattrass and Jon Evans saw the best period of Service passing. It was Nattrass who nearly extended Services lead further , picking up a loose clearance from the keeper and narrowly missing with his effort from 45 yards. However Smiths were to be rewarded for all their efforts. With 15 mins to go they broke clear and beat keeper Steel to set up a gran stand finish. Service's hearts were in their mouth a number of times and Smiths felt they deserved a penalty for King's challenge in the box however the referee say it differently and awarded a goal kick.
With the clock ticking down Smiths continued to threaten with pace. Manager Clarke then made his final change with Jez Mann comming on for Wayne O'Shea. The extra pace at the back saw Service absorb Smiths' final push and claim all 3 points
